Heritage Christian School
Gets Ready for “Souper Bowl”

Canton, OH, January 22, 2009 – Heritage Christian School is participating for the second year in a national movement to transform Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest youth-led weekend of giving and serving through the Souper Bowl of Caring.

January 26 – 30, Heritage Christian School students will collect food and hygiene items to help local families in need. Students in preschool through 12th grade are participating. In addition, there will be a labeled receptacle at the Greenfield side entrance of Heritage Christian School, 2107 6th St. SW in Canton during school days between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., where the community can drop off non-perishable donations. Heritage Beta Club students (national honor and service club) will gather and tally donations regularly and will report final collection amounts to www.souperbowl.org . A running total of collections will be available at www.heritagechristianschool.org.

One hundred percent of the items collected at Heritage will be donated to Turnaround Community Outreach (TCO) and to certain Heritage families in need. TCO is a non-profit organization in downtown Canton that provides groceries, meals, clothing, and other free services to people in need. TCO is an outreach ministry of Faith Family Church in Canton. Last year, Heritage families and the community donated 692 items, which were given to TCO.

Most needed items include the following:

Non-Perishable Food Items: cans of green beans, corn, peaches, pears, tuna, vegetable soup, chicken noodle soup, beef stew, spaghetti sauce; jars of applesauce, peanut butter, strawberry jelly; boxes of cereal, spaghetti noodles, instant mashed potatoes, cake/brownie mix; packages of wide pasta noodles, rice.

Hygiene Items: toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, bar of soap (No liquid soap, please), diapers, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid.

Heritage and Souper Bowl – Add One

TCO is located at 321 Cherry Avenue with most services available on Tuesdays. Every Tuesday at 11 a.m. and noon, they offer free hot meals following a church service. Every first and third Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., homeless families can visit TCO and receive free, on-site medical care through a partnership with Western Stark Medical Mobile Health Care. In addition, on the first and third Tuesdays, TCO offers grocery and clothing giveaways at 4:30 p.m. This is all part of TCO’s increasing efforts to serve as mediators and advocates for individuals, connecting them with other organizations to meet specific needs.

“The donations we received from Heritage Christian School and the community last year helped us to meet some of the basic needs of many families and individuals right here in Canton,” said Margaret Reaves, director of TCO. “We are always grateful when the community rallies behind us in support. We are especially grateful when young people step up to the challenge and make a difference. We would like to thank you again for helping us to bless those that are in need.”

Heritage Head Principal Howard Pizor said, “We hope to see the food collection grow this year as more community members become aware of it. The food and donations stay right here in our Canton neighborhoods and can make a real difference to families struggling to get by.”

About the Souper Bowl of Caring:

This national movement began on Super Bowl Sunday in 1988 by a simple prayer spoken by Brad Smith, a South Carolina pastor, “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.”

After a weekend of service and fundraising in their local communities, youth continue their unique Super Bowl celebration by reporting their donation at www.souperbowl.org. The reporting process provides participating groups the opportunity to monitor the success of their efforts and the collective efforts of youth across the country. Results are shared in real time at www.souperbowl.org. Young people have collected more than $50 million through the Souper Bowl of Caring. Every penny goes to local charities.

Souper Bowl of Caring is at work through church youth groups and schools, as well as a variety of service organizations. Ten NFL team owners have also made significant financial contributions to fund the Souper Bowl of Caring administrative expenses, according to the website. For more information, visit www.souperbowl.org.
